The 8 Best Kids Wagons, According to Parents

We pride ourselves in being unbiased gear experts. Learn more about how we research, expertly review and curate products here.

When it comes to parenting, one of the biggest concerns is how to get your kiddos from place to place—without a struggle. While double strollers are an obvious choice for families of multiple young children, wagons have become increasingly popular, particularly for those with toddlers who can’t yet walk long distances on their own. GoodBuy Gear’s expert panel also cites wagons’ advantage in giving toddlers and older kids more room to relax and stretch out during outings. Beach wagons initially gained popularity as they allowed parents to move gear and little ones at the same time, and wagons have now extended beyond beach trips to the every day.

Today’s models come in all shapes and sizes. The vast majority suit kids 12-18 months and beyond who can sit up unassisted even on uneven terrain, but there are a growing number of options with car seat adapters, so you can use your wagon even before your little one reaches one year old. Many even offer a compact fold in one swift movement for portability. Before heading off on your next family outing, equip yourself with one of the best wagons for kids, recommended by the parents and gear experts at GoodBuy Gear.

                Wagon FAQs

What Ages Are Wagons Good For?

Kid's wagons offer little ones less support than traditional strollers (even ones with five-point harness and seat belts for added security), so they’re often recommended for toddlers older than 18 months who can sit upright unassisted, even over minor bumps in the road. Typically, children can ride in wagons until about 5 years old.

Is a Stroller or a Wagon Better?

It’s hard to compare the two, since they’re not apples to apples. Strollers tend to be designed for everyday use—they are usually more compact and fold up neatly. Kid’s wagons, on the other hand, provide more unrestrained space for multiple children, as well as added storage space to tote gear. In many cases, wagons can also tackle rougher terrain, like sand or a trail. Think about what jives best with your lifestyle—a double stroller or a kid’s wagon—and make your decision that way.

Can a Wagon Replace a Stroller?

This largely depends on personal preference, but for most families, a kid’s wagon would not be a suitable replacement for a stroller. While wagons provide a good way to get multiple children from place to place, they’re not ideal for all daily activities or traveling since even the more modern models tend to be heavier, don’t fold up quite as easily and have an overall bulkier footprint.

While a kid's wagon may not entirely replace your go-to double stroller, there’s no question it’s a great addition to your arsenal of baby gear, especially if you have multiple children or an older toddler transitioning out of the stroller. Today’s options are plentiful and can afford parents and caregivers more flexibility and comfort—you’re sure to find the right option for your family.
